Growth of Digital Assets

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

by Jake Athey

file cabinets

Today’s businesses have not yet attained the much-ballyhooed goal of the paperless office. We do know that the amount of paper businesses produce has decreased substantially. Just ask file cabinet manufacturers. Their sales are down considerably and are at their lowest in the most computerized nations. Recycling boosters, efficiency experts and even some newly disciplined paper pushers themselves can share congratulations for the improvement. Of course, while saving some trees, making printer ink last longer and switching to online faxing is all well and good, the fact is that paper use may be down but the amount of information businesses need to store is up. It just has to be stored some other way, as digital files on hard disks, DVD-Rs, tape backups and online storage.

The growth of digital assets has changed the modern office. There are more computers, network storage devices and backup equipment than file cabinets now. Even companies that are not involved in publishing, the arts or the media might have product catalogs to both print and post on their Web sites. In-house advertising and marketing departments (to say nothing of ad and marketing agencies) have a tremendous amount of art, typefaces, software programs and other digital assets even before they start creating things. While it is true that firms are saving money on paper, they are now spending it on various kinds of storage media. If they didn’t make a plan to handle it with some sort of DAM (Digital Asset Management) procedures, they may have less paper but more confusion.

Managing bits and bytes

For some companies the transition from Computer Age to Online Age, meaning the change between the early 1990s and now, caught them off-guard. They did not see where things were going, something many of us are guilty of, and did not pause along the way to devise a DAM plan. A DAM program can be as simple as a single network storage device allowing a one-person operation to have all its clip art, fonts, photographs and finished pieces (ads, brochures, audio files, whatever) in one handy place. Adding another hard drive to the mix for backups, externally or in the network storage device, completes a bare bones DAM system.

Of course, most companies have greater needs than this, and companies that are in the business of producing digital media themselves have rather substantial requirements for both use and storage. With a strong onsite IT department, some companies can assemble their own DAM system from the ground up, buying servers, writing custom software, automating backups and transfers, and so forth. For safety and security, of course, these firms will most likely rely on the Internet, too, for offsite archiving of mission-critical assets. For companies that use and produce great quantities of digital assets, it’s all mission-critical.

Third-party systems

server room

The Internet’s apparent ease of use (there’s a lot happening in the background that most people don’t know about) has created a situation where many people think they can build Web sites, run networks and set up digital workflows with just a few mouse clicks. Although there are push-button solutions for some things, like family photo-sharing sites and publishing your neighbors’ garage sale signs, business operations are too important to be left to cookie cutter solutions. Large firms with well-staffed IT departments even turn to third party professionals when they encounter new challenges, and no one is embarrassed in the least. Why should they be? They want to do things right, and efficiently, and everyone who wants to make progress will retain the attitude of being ready to learn new things.

One of the great new things about all the technological advances is that there are always people who jump into a new thing and make it easier for everyone else. There are now companies that will help you manage your digital assets efficiently, with a minimum of setup headaches and full ongoing support. You can even choose to store your assets remotely, or both offsite and locally, for added security. A variety of DAM packages are available for firms with all sizes of budgets, where you can get just a few services, or a full solution with training, upgrades, a browser-based control panel, maintenance and technical support.

For all kinds of companies

Companies in all industries and of all sizes, whether retail stores or nonprofit groups, can leave the mess behind and bring efficiency and security to their digital assets. Again, this being the Online Age, you can try to cobble together your own DAM system, or avail your firm of one of the many solutions already designed for your situation. With a few tweaks and little training, you will have a truly custom solution for creating, distributing, managing, securing and archiving your important digital assets.

What is Malware and How Can I Get Rid of it? Spyware, Adware, and Viruses Defined

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

by Robert J.

padlock on computer

Spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, worms, keyloggers, and rogue anti-spyware are terms that you may or may not have heard before, so it’s probably best to just explain each one, so that you can take steps to ensure that your PC is protected against them. All of these are “malware”, which is short for “malicious software.”

Spyware -

Just as the name implies, it is a program that is installed on a computer and “spies” on or monitors it. Spyware programs are a type of “malware” that collect information about the user of a computer without the user’s knowledge. The user is usually unaware that spyware is even present on their computer. Although the name suggests that spyware simply monitors a user’s PC activity, spyware can also install additional software, monitor sites visited, internet activity, change home pages, and result in slowed internet connection speeds.

Adware -

As you can see that the word “Ad” is in the word, adware is software that supports advertising activities. Adware is a type of software that presents a user with advertisements by automatically playing them, displaying them, or downloading them after a user has installed a software application containing adware.

Viruses -

A computer virus operates very similar to a virus that results in you calling into work sick with a cold. A computer virus is a computer program that infects a host, in this case, your computer, and duplicates itself and spreads throughout your computer. Viruses are different from spyware, adware, and others because they have the ability to duplicate themselves. A virus is only called a “virus” if it can be transferred from one computer to another in the form of an executable file or code. Once the virus is in your computer, it can spread itself to other computers by infecting other computers on your network, etc. A virus can cause major file corruption/modification and slow down your computer drastically.

Trojans -

Trojans are very similar to the story of the “Trojan Horse” that you may have heard or read about. Trojans are malicious software that infiltrates your PC, while appearing to accomplish something legitimate or useful. What they really do is allow unauthorized access to your computer to some hooligan. Once this hooligan has remote access to your computer, he or she can do just about anything that the user account that they are logged into is allowed to do. Some examples of things that trojans do that you don’t want them to are: steal passwords and credit card information, install malicious software, edit or delete your files, record your keystrokes, and even view your screen or crash your computer.

Worms -

A worm is like a virus in that it is a program that can duplicate itself and distribute itself to other computers on a network. Worms exploit security loopholes, consume large amounts of network bandwidth, and usually harm the network in some way. The worst part about worms is that they can allow backdoor access to your computer to some hooligan that would like to send spam email from your computer or engage in some other form of illegal activity.

Keyloggers -

Keyloggers are malicious software that secretly track and record your keystrokes on your keyboard so that some hooligan can steal your passwords and personal information without your knowledge.

the bad guys

Rogue Anti-Spyware -

Rogue anti-spyware is malicious software that tricks users into purchasing “fake” software to remove malware, viruses, etc. This fake software does not remove malware and simply convinces the user that they should purchase the fake software to solve some PC emergency or detection of errors. Many rogue anti-spyware programs contain a Trojan-like component that infiltrates your PC.

How can I ensure that my PC doesn’t have any spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, worms, keyloggers, or rogue anti-spyware?
In order to identify and get rid of such threats to your PC, you need to install an anti-spyware program that is able to effectively detect and clean your system of such infections. There are several product options for detecting and cleaning your system of all the problems listed above, but it is very important that you select a quality program and keep it updated. Keeping your anti-malware program updated it is crucial to detecting and stopping all of the malicious software described above.

The Fun Trademarks Exercised Around Web 2.0

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

by Charles McDuffie

With the expanded utilization of Web 2.0 sites and plans, nearly all of the online entertainment establishments (as well as the media related sites) are increasing in popularity, primarily with the younger generation. Since the World Wide Web is a market based on visuals, Web 2.0 sites and programs are gearing up to face the problem of retaining the younger people.

These sites are gradually taking on more modern and present-day entertainment logos to appeal to the younger market. Internet marketers newly going into the market with the web as their market place need to cautiously evaluate and examine the most recent styles and trends in logo designs. This is mainly important in the case of entertainment companies and firms in the media business as they are expected to have impressive logo designs and corporate identities.

The Latest Logo Designs In The Market

1) Punctuations and Keyboard Symbols – These emblems are now deeply ingrained e-mails, IM messaging and the standard teen culture. These are now being translated into various media logos, designs and expressions which always indicate a strange interpretation that is viewer dependent. Incorporation of these symbols into an effective logo design also reveals the freedom of expression and communication.

2) Soft Font Styles – These are a surefire way of depicting familiarity and ease of use. The logos of MySpace and Skype are well known examples of these styles. These Web 2.0 sites exhibit a modern and forceful presentation with their vibrant designs. Entertainment logos which use rounded typefaces from various families of font styles are now leaders in incorporating a friendly off-key quality. 3) Revolutionary Font Styles – Font styles that exhibit a futuristic design are extremely popular with logos of the web media. These styles portray a highly progressive status that’s ideal to exhibit the content of a Web 2.0 site for business purposes. High-quality finishing, sharp edges and pixels help to set the trend for upcoming businesses.

4) Halves and Reflections – Logo designs for Web 2.0 sites based on this style are extremely effective and pleasing for all types of designs whether they’re typographical, abstract or a combination of both. Halves offer a classy impact that makes the viewer want to look for a while longer at the design and the utilization of slightly faded reflections below the name uncovers eye catching clarity.

5) Usage of Primary Colors – Using primary colors in the logo design is a fast growing trend among Web 2.0 sites that’s instantly catching on involving significant web based organizations. Entertainment logos of Shutterfly and Xanga are prime examples of this. Various colors such as red, blue, green and yellow are used in minimal quantities with great control to present an effective design as is evident in the case of sites such as Google and eBay.

6) 3D Effects – Using 3D effects in icons, images and letters is a escalating trend that’s fast catching on to provide effective logo designs.
